Weber Tylon Ultra-flex the right choice adhesive for large format floor tiles

Weber Tylon Ultra-flex is the perfect adhesive for large format floor tiles.  It is a highly flexible, high strength, rapid-set cement-based tile adhesive suitable for floor applications. Produced from carefully selected raw materials for consistency of product, it only requires the addition of water on site and sets in 6 hours.

Here is a a couple of reason why you should choose Weber Tylon Ultra-flex as the prefered ashesive for large format floor tiles:

Working with large tiles - is a quick-set adhesive an advantage?

Due to the large dimension of tiles in combination with narrow joints, the drying of adhesive is extremely slow as the containing water is unable to evaporate quickly. Therefore, a faster- setting product make sense. Indoors a self drying product is prefered. A combination of binders will crystallize the water and drying takes place in a more regular way.

Most adhesives are not suitable for exterior use. A very important factor here is the kind of substrate. When absorbent, the mixing water of the adhesive is able to penetrate and drying is usually not a huge problem. When a waterproofing coat (in wet areas) is substrate, the use of a fast setting/ self- drying adhesive is mandatory.

Weber Tylon Ultra-flex is suitable for interior and exterior use, tiling over timber flooring and existing ceramic and porcelain tiles.

What is considered a large format tile?

The bigger the better! There is no standard regulation but the following is considered:

3.2m X 1.8m

  • (3.2m X 1.8m = 5.76 sqm per tile )
  • (5.76sqm at approx. 20kg per sqm = 115.2kg per tile )
  • Required – 15 spacers and 15 wedges

1.4m X 2.8m

  • (1.4M X 2.8m = 3.92 sqm per tile)
  • (3.92sqm at approx. 20kg per sqm = 78.4kg per tile)
  • Required – 8 spacers and 8 wedges

1.8m X 900mm

  • (1.8m X 900mm = 1.62 sqm per tile)
  • (1.62sqm at approx 20kg per sqm = 32.4kg per tile)
  • Required – 6 spacers and 6 wedges

1.6m x 800mm

  • (1.6m x 800mm = 1.28 sqm per tile)
  • (1.28sqm at approx. 20kg per sqm = 26.60kg per tile)
  • Required – 5 spacers and 5 wedges

Why is it important to use the right tile adhesive for large tiles?

Besides large dimensions with narrow joints and expert tiling expertise, these tiles are porcelanic – meaning they have low water uptake (app. 0.5%). Therefore the adhesive should be polymer- modified to achieve a better adhesion. Thermal movements are expectable and high deformability specifications are recommended.

What is the recommended application thickness for large tiles?

Applying the adhesive in a 20 mm thickness is recommended. Ultra-flex is suitable for thicknesses up to 20 mm. A buttering-floating technique should be applied, and the bedding should accomplish full contact between the tile and the substrate. The size of the tile and the substrate's evenness determine how much adhesive is used. The bedding thickness of around 3–4 mm is correlated with the average usage of 4-5 kg/m². That can be important for pre- levelling or repairing the substrate.

What is the rule on joints when tiling with large format tiles?

Technical recommendations state that joints should be at least 3 mm. But this is not how things really work. A lot of end consumers want 1 mm or even smaller. While it may not be a major issue indoors in residential settings, it can cause harm outdoors or in big areas (such as malls and airport terminals) if thermal fluctuations are not compensated for.

Is it important to ensure the surface is perfectly flat to prevent tile breakage?

The use of levelling clamps is mandatory to have a complete even tile surface.

Large tiles is expensive – breakage, not using the right adhesive. What else is important to know when tiling with large tiles?

Large tile application is different from tiles in standard dimension. It is not possible to move the tile in the bedding mortar or using a rubber hammer to knock on the tile. Therefore, the adhesive must be soft and fluffy when fresh. As mentioned, buttering/floating and leveling clamps are mandatory. For the application vacuum handles or a metal frame with vacuum spots must also be used. For tile cutting special tools are required. When pipes are penetrating the tile surface, a diamond core driller must be used. The positioning of the boreholes according to the position of the pipes is challenging.
